The Marvelous Raincaster of Yell Holler Preview

A good yarn is tough to pull apart, but a delight to wind back together.

Rarely do we encounter a game with such a minimalist visual style that is also so firmly rooted in its location. Unembellished line art and a limited color palette of greens, browns, and yellows come together with the writing, sound design, and music in The Marvelous Raincaster of Yell Holler to plant us directly into the lush countryside of the Ozarks. Developers Brain&Brain concocted the exact right balance of insect chirps and bird calls that will have you waving away the sudden humidity that they seem to conjure in the air. Jovial and occasionally melancholic banjo riffs will carry you away to a dusty wooden porch with a glass of iced tea in hand, condensation dripping down its sides, to hear a gravelly-voiced spinner of yarns sit down and tell you a tale.

The Marvelous Raincaster of Yell Holler in Action

The Marvelous Raincaster of Yell Holler follows the feats and foibles of a legendary weathermaker and, much like its title character, the game seems to have the power to change the very atmosphere around you as you play it. In the blink of an eye, you’ll realize you’re back at your desk, looking at an indie game with such sparingly-used visuals they could be adornments on the pages of a children’s book. But it’s not about how much flourish you have, it’s how you use it that matters. As it turns out, this is what our cocky weather-changing protagonist seems to be learning as well.

The Marvelous Raincaster of Yell Holler follows the feats and foibles of a legendary weathermaker and, much like its title character, the game seems to have the power to change the very atmosphere around you as you play it.

But the roads in these parts are winding and so is this story. Our folksy storyteller needs a hand to pull apart the threads of his ballad and put them back together in the right sequence. Each stanza represents both an interaction between characters and a moment in time, highly aware of every moment that came before it. When you proceed through the story the first time around, the narrator starts to remark that things don’t seem quite right. He even shows up himself, at one moment, to his own surprise.

Your job will be to rearrange each stanza and glean what information you can from the incorrect order of events, to eventually piece together the correct flow. This is one of those puzzle games where being wrong can often be just as fun as getting things right, as incorrect sequences will lead to some charmingly unexpected moments.

The Marvelous Raincaster of Yell Holler Trailer

Giving us a taste of one chapter of the game in about 20 minutes’ time, the demo is the perfect length and pace to demonstrate the magical properties of The Marvelous Raincaster of Yell Holler. I’ve already fallen in love with this vision of the Ozarks, with our unreliable narrator, and with our adorable cast of critters. It feels strange to say, but I already feel nostalgia for young Rolly Possum, Mayor Rooster, and Poor Will. But maybe just as a weathermaker invokes the rain, this game can conjure good memories right out of thin air.
